Recently some of our Healthcare Leaders board members took a break for a quick trip to Senza Maeso, a distillery,
tasting room and bar founded by twin brothers Ryan and Jay Gitman. Their menu features a diverse fascinating array of cocktails based on their eponymous liquor, Senza Maeso, which means, “without master”. It is a hybrid spirit derived from the South American cape gooseberry. Aged for several months with herbs including damiana and epazote the flavor is so uniquely nuanced it is difficult to describe and do sufficient justice. But, as the brothers describe it on their webite, “the taste is bright, balanced, and complex, yielding notes of apricot and citrus, with an herbaceous, bitter finish.” Ryan was behind the bar for our visit, and was a gracious and informative host sharing interesting tidbits of information about his recipes. The tasting room is located at 1090 Farm to Market 32 in San Marcos and is well worth the trip. The spirit can also be purchased at various outlets around the state (see the store locator on their website). We give it several enthusiastic thumbs up and will be returning soon!
